An upcoming business move "will be another critical stepping stone in the revitalization of Fort Ritchie," according to John Krumpotich. The Washington County Board of Zoning Appeals on Wednesday night granted a special exception that will allow a custom auto parts manufacturer to move into the former base commissary building. Randall Harshman, who operates Harshman Automotive Inc. at 36 E. Water St. in Smithsburg, plans to sell the vehicle service and repair business to focus on making custom parts. He plans to move the machines and the parts-making business into the building at Fort Ritchie.
"The original commissary building that he will be operating in has remained empty or in light use since the base closure in 1998," Krumpotich wrote in his application to the zoning board. "Bringing this business to the property will be another critical stepping stone in the revitalization of Fort Ritchie." The building is toward the rear of the property, he said. And the aluminum parts-making process generates little noise or dust.
